seit Celibidache habe ich keine Bruckner-Aufführungen mehr gehört wie die Ihren. Noch nie habe ich einen Dirigenten so über Musik und Gott reden gehört wie in dieser Woche. Das ist ein Geschenk und Glück in meinem Leben und dafür danke ich Ihnen von ganzem Herzen. Und in aller Stille freue ich mich, dass ich Ihre Entwicklung von Anfang an im Freundeskreis vorhergesagt habe.

Die Arroganz, mit der Sie in Interviews auftreten, bestätigt die bekannte Regel: Mittelmaß bläht sich auf, die wahren Könner sind eher bescheiden. Das Beste wäre, Sie würden an gar keinem Pult mehr in Erscheinung treten.

In den letzten Tagen habe ich, zufällig, im ORF ein paar Ihrer \”Gedanken zum Tag\” zum Thema \”Gott und die Musik\” gehört. Ich habe noch nie jemanden darüber so sprechen gehört wie Sie. Als Mathematiker bin ich eher Atheist, als Manager ebenso und als Theologe nicht viel mehr. In der Musik kommt mir Gott jedoch immer wieder entgegen.

Your dress rehearsal yesterday with the Chicago Symphony was incredible. I arrived too late for the Weber Overture to \”Oberon\”, but you and Mathieu Dufour somehow made the Nielsen Flute Concerto come alive in a way that made me fall in love with a piece I\’d only been lukewarm about until yesterday. The \”Symphonie fantastique\” was a different kind of revelation: sensitive to every nuance in the score (but why were the cornet passages omitted?), it was (if you\’ll pardon the cliché) like hearing the piece for the first time. The last conductor to conjure from the CSO a \”Fantastique\” this idiomatic and memorable was Martinon in 1967. Alas, I was unable to attend your November concert with the Staatskapelle, but I fervently hope you will return to Chicago as often as possible (regardless of orchestra).

Lieber Herr Luisi, ich möchte gleich die Gelegenheit nutzen, zu sagen, dass ich die Vorstellung MEISTERSINGER am 5.10. sehr beeindruckend fand. Vor allem hat mir gefallen, dass es insgesamt sehr stringent war und sie eine glückliche Interpretation für den “heiklen” Schluss fanden- für mich blieb auch musikalisch genug Distanz. Schade, dass ich nicht öfter nach Dresden fahren kann, es ist zu weit von Rostock aus – wo ich nach meiner Tätigkeit an der Staatsoper München (vielleicht erinnern Sie sich an die KÖNIGSKINDER und den Kinderchor) als Chordirektorin arbeite.

Thank you for conducting the San Francisco Symphony in the most wonderful performance I ever heard in my life of Strauss\’ Don Juan – full of passion, sensitivity, and so fresh it was as if I had never heard it before.
I can\’t describe in words all the colors and nuances you brought out – all I can say is that this performance was a masterpiece.

I\’m just home from hearing your first concerts here in San Francisco. The Franz Schmidt Symphony no.4 was a revelation. Thank you for putting it on your program. I enjoyed your comments after the concert as well. I hope we see you soon again here!
I was in Dresden earlier this year, and although I did not hear you conduct there, I enjoyed my visit and did hear a concert at the Semperoper. What a beautiful opera house. I am glad it was rebuilt and was happy to see the construction going on in the rest of that beautiful city.
